Pre-Chlorination- Chlorine is added to the raw water to remove bacteria and other micro-organisms that would otherwise slow down the treatment process.
Removal of Impurities - Impurities in the water are removed by sedimentation and filtration. To encourage impurities to settle out of the water a coagulant (aluminum sulphate) and a coagulation aid (polymer) are added. The impurities, aided by the polymer, bind to the coagulant in a process known as flocculation, forming large particles called flocs. After flocculation the water passes into a sedimentation tank or clarifier where the large flocs settle to the bottom, thus clarifying the water. From the clarifier the water passes through rapid gravity sand filters where any remaining small flocs and impurities are removed.
Disinfections & Distribution - After filtration the clean water is finally disinfected with chlorine to ensure that the water remains free of bacteria whilst it is being transported through the distribution pipe network to your connection.
Water Quality Monitoring - Water quality is monitored continuously during the treatment process to ensure that only the required amount of chemicals are added. Once the water enters the distribution system it is routinely monitored to ensure that it is free from bacteria.
